D2 Place and the renowned French May Arts Festival enter their tenth year of collaboration, a truly milestone partnership. From May 8th to 31st, the two parties will join hands to present the 10th-anniversary celebration 'Mona Lisa and Her Adventures in Hong Kong', bringing a creative knitwear art exhibition and a French-style carnival market to Lai Chi Kok, offering an artistic journey that transcends geography and media. Highlights of the event include the 'Mona Lisa and Her Adventures in Hong Kong' knitwear art exhibition planned by Laws Knitters, as well as over 40 market booths featuring French brands, fine wines, and delicacies, inviting the public to celebrate this French artistic festival together.
'Mona Lisa and Her Adventures in Hong Kong' Knitwear Art Exhibition Blends Local Culture and Creativity
The core of this year's celebration is undoubtedly the 'Mona Lisa and Her Adventures in Hong Kong' knitwear art exhibition, which brings French legend into the Hong Kong daily life. Laws Knitters showcases its exceptional craftsmanship by reinterpretating Leonardo da Vinci's classic masterpiece through knitting techniques. Mona Lisa steps out of the frame, transforms into an urban adventurer, and ventures into the streets of Hong Kong: whether she is drinking tea and eating dim sum at a cha chaan teng, enjoying egg waffles on Tai Ping Shan, or searching for the 'Twelve Chinese Zodiacs' in natural landscapes, the enigmatic smile from the master's brush will collide wonderfully with the local 'Hong Kong-style' ambiance, unfolding an 'Adventure in Hong Kong'!
Series One: 'A Smile for Pets'
This series, themed 'Pet-friendly', releases Mona Lisa from the classic painting and brings her into a vibrant and emotionally connected animal world. In the scene, she no longer sits still but actively interacts with different species. This series of works not only conveys the message that D2 Place is a 'pet-friendly' mall but also aims to portray a gentle relationship that transcends boundaries, reflecting an art that has been reinterpreted and a lifestyle that is more gentle and connective.
Series Two: 'Mona Lisa Sings the Fragrant River'
In this series, Mona Lisa steps out of the museum and immerses herself in the daily life of Hong Kong. She overlooks Victoria Harbour from the peak, strolls the streets with egg waffles in hand, and savors dim sum at a tea house, becoming a part of the city.
The works bridge the distance between classic art and the public in a relaxed and humorous manner, making art approachable and integrated into the details of life. Through familiar Hong Kong scenes and objects, viewers can rediscover the affinity of art and the unique charm of urban culture with a smile.
Series Three: 'Mona Lisa's Twelve Traces'
This series of works cleverly combines the traditional Chinese 'Twelve Chinese Zodiacs' with Hong Kong's unique landscape culture. Mona Lisa transforms into an 'urban adventurer', traversing multiple unique scenes in Hong Kong named after the 'Twelve Chinese Zodiacs', creating a cross-cultural and cross-regional visual dialogue that allows viewers to rediscover Hong Kong and its unique 'Twelve Chinese Zodiacs' landscapes.
Each knitwear art piece meticulously presents the forms of the zodiac animals while deeply incorporating Hong Kong's terrain features and collective memories, naturally intertwining Western classic imagery with Eastern cultural symbols. This is not just a visual cultural collage but also a reinterpretation of identity recognition, local values, and tradition inheritance, fully reflecting Hong Kong's inclusivity and diverse facets as an international metropolis.
The exhibition is held at THE LOFT, Basement, D2 Place Phase 2, from now until May 31st. Multiple wall-hanging works of different sizes will be displayed, allowing viewers to appreciate the warmth that the knit texture brings to the artworks up close.
French Carnival Market Full of Surprises: Capture Instagrammable Moments with Mona Lisa
